“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”

― Henry Ford

A two-year-old taught me the most important lesson.

It was about learning and mastering a new habit.

You wouldn’t believe it.

Here’s how it all went:

Every night we have to get this two-year-old to bed.

You probably know how hard it is to achieve this.

In the early days, he didn’t want to go to sleep.

He just wanted to play around some more.

Then we would turn the light off as a signal.

C’mon kiddo! It’s bedtime.

He wouldn’t budge.

It was challenging.

“You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over”

— Richard Branson

After about two weeks, he slowly started responding to lights-out and bed calls.

Six weeks in, he was good.

He would immediately go to bed once the lights were out.

We were glad we had a system that worked. Lights out, and he would go to bed.

Until one night.

There was a power issue.

All lights went off for about 60 seconds.

Power got restored, and we couldn’t find him anywhere near.

We looked everywhere.

Where could he have gone in just under 60 seconds?

While busy looking for him, we heard a creaky sound on the other side of the house.

It turned out that he was already in bed.

He misread the power outage as a signal for bedtime and took off.

I was shocked.

Closing Thoughts

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it “

— Pablo Picasso

Learning a new habit or skill can be challenging in the initial stages.

But once you hit top gear, you will become unstoppable.

Be patient with yourself, and do not despise the days of small beginnings.

Keep going!
