Job applications are a myth.
Sometimes it feels like a black box.
You put in your best and apply, and then wait, hoping you will get that call inviting you for an interview.
After a couple of days or weeks, you get the dreaded email that your application was not successful.
But let’s be honest, once you click “submit,” most of what happens next is out of your control.
I have spoken to many professionals going through this process.
After reviewing their application and listening to them, I have found one main reason most of them are not getting shortlisted.
This might also apply to you.
Recruiters Don’t Know You.
Here is the truth:
Many recruiters hire those they know and like.
But they will not tell you.
Recruiters receive far too many applications to handle.
In many cases, they already have one or two candidates in mind. People they have met, referred to, or interacted with before.
In most cases, these people automatically make the shortlist.
Then, the recruiter might scan the pile for two or three other strong contenders to add to the mix.
So what happens if your name doesn’t ring a bell or your application doesn’t stand out?
It’s simple.
You get overlooked.
So, before you apply to your next role, ask yourself one simple question:
“How can I get the recruiter to notice me?”
That’s where your real job search begins.

I would add to that: if they do know you - make their job as easy as possible. Be the solution to the problem.
