Last week, I conducted a poll. This poll asked for your opinion about who the hiring manager eventually hires. If you haven’t seen the post, take a look here.
About half of you said the hiring manager eventually hires the candidate they like, which is the correct answer.
Here’s the response summary:
Yep, we can debate this answer for ages, but that’s the fact of hiring.
No employer will hire you if they do not like you.
Given the high engagement and interesting views, I thought I would conduct another poll this week.
So, this week, I am asking another question.
Here it goes:
Time’s up!
So, what was your answer? Go back and click on it.
Here’s What I Think
The first step in applying for a job is not informing your network that you are looking for a job. What sort of job would you tell them you are looking for?
Some of you might argue that it’s by developing your resume and cover letter. Honestly, this argument looks fair, but I don’t believe it’s the right direction. How would you write a resume and cover letter that sells?
Yep, as you have rightly guessed, the correct answer is to perform a skill audit to gain clarity and understand who you are, what you are good at and what you want. Job seekers who cannot clearly define their skills and what they bring to the table often struggle to land great roles.
This is because they try to appeal to all employers to get lucky and land a job. Sadly, this strategy often backfires. You can’t land a role if you are for everybody. You need to have specific skills and background for specific employers, and this comes by understanding who you are and what you want.
Closing Thoughts
The first step in applying for your dream role is not writing your resume and cover letter, which is common in society.
Perform a skill audit to understand who you are, what you want, and what you can offer.
You can’t land your dream role without clarity.
