Josh is a top professional in his field. He’s had a relatively stable career in healthcare over the years and does not see himself having trouble finding work. At least, soon.
Josh finally hopes to leave his company to take a couple of months off and then land another job to help him continue his career and life.
After months of back and forth, John decided to inform his employer he’d finally leave.
Josh handed over his notice exactly four weeks before the last day.
As a professional, he thought he wouldn’t have trouble landing another role after his holidays. He felt he could land another role within 2-4 weeks, depending on the hiring practices on the other end, so he thinks.
Anyway, three months out, Josh hasn’t landed another role.
He’s still looking.
Here are the mistakes Josh made and how you can learn from them.
Job Hunting Can Be Unpredictable
A job search can be very unpredictable. Job hunting is a no respecter of persons.
Sometimes events beyond your control can happen to lengthen your job search process.
Sometimes the hiring practices at your target companies can differ from what you are already used to and expect to happen. Sadly, this can affect your job search game, depending on your circumstances.
Always Be Of The Game
To ensure you are on the right side, you must always take career decisions carefully.
I highly recommend looking for work and building relationships when you don’t need it. This is when you have less pressure and can think clearly about what you want.
Putting these things in place might make your job search easier. It’s also a good idea to land another job before you quit the current one.
Don’t Wait Until The End
More importantly, acknowledge that things might change rapidly, so you also want to start your job search early. It can take one to three months to apply for a role, attend an interview, get an offer and begin with the new company.
In Josh’s case, he probably left too late and got burnt.
Closing Thoughts
Job search is very unpredictable, especially in the last couple of years.
Don’t leave your job search game until the very end. The best time to look for work is not when you need it. It’s when you don’t.
Ease the pressure on yourself and stay ahead of the game by being smarter with your search.
