Know your interview panel is no longer an option.
It's a must-do.
Some time ago, I was invited for a job interview.
I loved the role and was excited about the interview.
While looking through the interview invitation email, I noticed I was missing something. I didn't get the names of the panel.
I had gotten used to seeing the names of interview panel members.
As you would expect, I responded quickly to the email requesting the names of those who would be at the interview.
Thankfully, the hiring manager responded with the details.
But why is this really important?
I will explain to you:
#1. Prepare Better For The Interview
Knowing your interview guests helps you prepare better.
Knowing those who would be interviewing me for a role was an added advantage. It gave me insights into their backgrounds and interests. Their LinkedIn profiles is a great place to start your research.
Knowing whom you will meet is important to help you prepare better for the interview.
#2. Guess The Type Of Questions To Expect
Knowing the questions to expect can be a game-changer.
Once I can discern the panel's background, I can guess the direction of the questions to expect from each panel member.
For example, if I was interviewing for a technical role and found a technical person on the panel, I could imagine the technical stuff would come from this panel member. I can tell I would get at least one technical interview question at the interview.
Similarly, if I had a finance guru on the panel, I might expect some follow-up questions relating to finance or accounting from this fellow.
You get the point?
Knowing your interview guests can help you predict the theme of questions to expect.
#3. Understand What You Have In Common
The panel eventually hires candidates they think are like them.
The panel hires those they like and are similar to them. It's that simple. For example, I love soccer. I love the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
If I notice the panel chair has interests in soccer, it would be great to showcase this, perhaps during informal chats. Humans like those who are like them.
It's a simple yet effective strategy, so knowing your panel is critical.
Parting Thoughts
Knowing those interviewing you can make a difference in your interviewing preparation.
Don’t leave it to chance.
This information can help you prepare to the best of your ability and impress the panel. Remember, the better prepared you are for an interview, the higher your chances of landing the role.
Know your panel.
